The UH-72A is deployed for Haiti disaster response and humanitarian support

January 25, 2010

The American Eurocopter-built UH-72A Lakota is part of international disaster response and humanitarian efforts organized following the January 12 earthquake in Haiti.

Deployed by the Puerto Rico National Guard to neighboring Dominican Republic, the Light Utility Helicopter is being utilized to transport people, cargo and supplies.

Two Lakotas were delivered to the Puerto Rico National Guard in May 2009, which are equipped for general aviation and support missions. Operated by Detachment B/1-114AV, these helicopters were the first UH-72As to be based outside the continental United States.

American Eurocopter produces the UH-72A at its Columbus, Mississippi facility for program prime contractor EADS North America.  A total of 345 Lakotas are expected to be acquired through 2015 for U.S. Army and National Guard operations in missions that range from homeland security and drug interdiction to general support, logistics and medical evacuation flights (MEDEVAC).

To date, the Army has ordered 178 Lakotas, with government funding currently allocated for the production of UH-72As to be delivered through June 2011.

See the official UH-72A program website for more on the Lakota’s deployment to support the Haiti earthquake relief, and view a Pentagon Channel video clip of the Lakota in action.
